Thượng Đế Cũng Phải Cười: The Gods Must Be Crazy is a comedy film from South Africa and Botswana, written and directed by Jamie Uys and released in 1980 in South Africa. The film follows the story of Xi, a Sho tribe native living in the Kalahari desert who has never been in contact with the outside world. After the success of the film, The Gods Must Be Crazy spawned 4 sequels, with the last 3 being made in Hong Kong. The film tells the adventure of Xi, a native Sho man, who embarks on a jouey to the edge of the Earth to dispose of a Coca-Cola bottle left behind by white people that his tribe cannot destroy. Alongside Xi's adventure are two other small stories involving the relationship between a scientist and a white female teacher, as well as a group of rebels on the run. The Sho tribe of Xi lives isolated in the Kalahari desert, completely unaware of the mode world. Trouble comes to the tribe when a Coca-Cola bottle dropped from a passing plane lands in their midst. Believing it to be a gift from the gods, each member of the tribe tries to possess and use it for different purposes. However, the peaceful and happy life of the tribe is disrupted by disputes over the mysterious object. Believing it brings misfortune, Xi decides to take the bottle to the edge of the world to dispose of it. On his jouey, he encounters many challenges as he is exposed to mode life with unfamiliar objects and actions.
